The 2013 Thanksgiv-Fling Results and Wind-up

Rossland, BC - The event went off without a hitch.  The weather was perfect, the turnout was great and the frolf was to die for.  45 of Rossland's finest showed up on Saturday morning to take part in this year's RFA Fling disc golf tournament.  With a chill in the air the registration was smooth and the groupings were made.  Players of all ages and abilities set out to tackle the recently upgraded course and the course was theirs for the taking.  There were some great results after the first round, with a two way tie at -2 in the NOTSOPRO (or were they?) category and a -6 and -4 in the PRO category.  The Birds had 8 women compete and it was a very close first 18.  The Flying Steamshovel supplied the crowd with deep fried turkey and fixins and Blaine and Sleemans.ca supplied a few woobly pops to get the 2nd round off with a bang.  In the final round, the PRO category was a ding dong battle.  Peach stretched his 2 stroke lead to 4 after 2 holes and played well enough to put up a -5, finishing the 2 round tourney at 11 under par.  Fochuk and Fry (-4 and -2 respectively after round 1) battled throughout the entire 2nd 18 with Fry edging Foch by one stroke finishing -5 to Foch's -4.  Congrats to all the PRO's and Peach's 1st championship since the inaugural event after 4 second place results.  In the NOTSOPRO category, Jay and Silent Bob (Actually Johnny Linsday) were -2 after the first round and 2 strokes ahead of Bowman and one other.  Their play was exemplary as was their demeanor.  Jay held on to take the title from Johnny finishing Even for the tournament and booking him a place in the PRO category in 2014.  Well done and welcome my friend...  Michelle once again took the LADIES crown with 2 fantastic rounds.  The competition stayed with her for a while but in the end her distance off the tee and accurate mid ranges were too much for the rest of the field.  The 2 time champion was excited to take home some great prizes and  bragging rights to her beau (Mark, the 2011 NOTSOPRO champ)!  The RFA would like to thank everyone that made the event possible, The Flying Steamshovel and affiliated businesses, Blaine Benner and Sleemans Brewing, The Trio (Jock, Alan and Craig), The Black Jack Nordinc Centre, The Rossland Telegraph and everyone that came out to enjoy the end of season fiasco.

We hope you all had a great time and see you next year at the 2014 RFA Fling Disc Golf Tournament!

The 2012 FALL FLING, another one in the books...

Rossland, BC - In a last minute effort, the Rossland Frolf Association put on a great Fall Fling disc golf tourney to make it their 5th annual event.  The weather was perfect, as was the course, vistas and play by all contestants.  Approximately 30 Frolfers took to the course to battle the 18 holes, make new friends and try to find some hidden treasures. In the PRO category, the competition was tight after the first round with only 4 strokes seperating the top 5 players.  The second round proved to divide the men from the boys with Buzzsaw shooting a tournament low of -7, running away with his second straight Fling Crown.  Peach, who struggled in the first round bounced back from 4 strokes down (5th place) to shoot a -3 and for the 4th year in the last 5 ended up in second place.  Courtney shot 2 steady rounds of par frolf and took 3rd place.  Penner dominated the NOT SO PRO category finishing +4 and taking the win by 6 strokes over a field of 18 disc golfers.  Chantal was just shy of spectacular taking her first LADIES Fling championship.  She shot +1 in round one and bettered her effort in the second round with and even par.  Michelle finished a close second and followed up her 2011 victory with a second place finish, just off of Chantal's torrid pace.  A special thanks goes out to Chris Bowman for making the day possible with all of his hard work.  Also, thank you to Blaine Benner for the prizes and wobbly pops, The Flying Steam Shovel for the super lunch time grub, The Rossland Frolf Association for supplying the effort, Reimer Drywalling for the marker discs and Black Jack Nordic Centre for the wonderful venue.  ~WHAM'O

What time should I arrive?
Be there at 9am for registration.  10am is a shotgun tee off.

I'm new to the game, am I welcome?
Abso-frickin-lutely!  There are 2 categories on the Men's side: PRO (if ya got game) and NOTSOPRO (if ya just like to get out and chuck some plastic).  There is also a LADIES category for all those Bettys that like to play.

Do I need to bring a lunch?
Included in the registration fee is a BBQ lunch.  This will take place in-between the 2 rounds.

Where is the "Thin Air" Frolf Course?
The "Thin Air" Frolf course is located at the Black Jack Nordic Center.  Google it and get the location. The first hole is right behind the lodge.  There are hole signs throughout the course.

How much is the shin-dig going to set me back?
The registration fee for the PRO category will be approx. $40 ($15 going towards the purse), NOTSOPRO will be approx. $25 and the LADIES $20.  The final price is not set as the cost of the tournament is still being worked out.  These prices would be on the upper end.  Included in the registration is lunch, a bottle or 2 of water,  some swag, 2 rounds of disc golf and your name in the raffle for tons of great prizes!

Will there be any "refreshments"?
Lets put it this way...  One of our main dudes is a beer rep and the other owns a bar.  You do the math!

Should I be stoked?
Darn tootin!  This should be a great tourney.  Come and enjoy our wonderful Frolf course and of course have fun meeting some new folks at the same time.  See ya there!

New Course

Hey all you Rosland Frolfers, it is time to start thinking about hucking discs again. I'm sure you are all aware of the disruption our course suffered this past fall, as a result we will need to do some redesigning this spring. I am proposing a general meeting of all interested parties to look at the future of the Thin Air Disc Golf Course. Enlarging the course to include a full 18 holes, 9 tones 9 baskets, pushing back to where we had our original 18???
We will need some serious volunteer time in order to get the new course happening ASAP. Please post comments and thoughts so we can get theprocess going. Cheers, Happy Hucking.

Salmo strikes again: Kiefer captures 3rd annual RFA Fling Frolf Tourney

Thin Air Frolf Club, Rossland - John Keifer, Salmo's resident sharp shooter, defeated Buzzsaw (Devon) on the 2nd playoff hole to be crowned this year's Midsummer's Fling champion.  Buzzsaw showed why his BC title was not a fluke by battling back being down 3 strokes to Kiefer with 9 holes to play to force the sudden death playoff.  Fortunately for Keif, Buzz gripped a little tight on his 2nd playoff tee shot and send his ROC out-of-bounds letting John stroll to his first RFA title and local West Kootenay dominance, holding both the Salmo and now Rossland Title Tourney Titles.  Defending champion, Fry, placed 3rd with his usual solid play but was unable to regain the form that gave him the win a year ago.  Peaches and Retallack Phil finished 4th and 5th respectively.  In the NOT SO PRO category Benner walked away with his first title shooting a mind blowing -2 over two rounds.  His consistent play sandwiched him between the "shirtless wonders" who grabbed 2nd and 3rd and stating that shirts are truly optional.  Finally, Tanner captured her 2nd RFA title winning the Ladies category for the 2nd time in 3 years.  She narrowly defeated Corinne who ironically broke up Tanner's time on top winning last year's Fling by only one stroke.  The two gunslinger's showdowns might be coming to an end with Corinne planning a move to the island to study the art of Frolfology under the tutelage of renown Frolf Guru, Hu Kit-far.  Michelle took 3rd for the second year in a row.  The tournament went off with out a hitch and is proving to be a staple event on the Rossland Calender.  The RFA would like to thank all of the this year's sponsors - RossVegas, The Flying Steamshovel, Retallack Cat-Skiing, Ardis at Century 21, Redstone Golf and CC, Adrenaline Adventures and the Prestige Hotel.

"The Frolfumentary" to be shown at the 2008 Rossland FilmFest

This fall a group of local frolfers, headed by Peach Productions, filmed a documentary style movie about disc golf, the local scene and the people who play. The film stars Jeff "Chunk" Butcher, Blaine Benner and features an original song written and preformed by Tanner Ansley. "The Frolfumentary" is tentatively scheduled to be shown on Friday November 21, 2008 at the 2008 Rossland Mountain Film Festival. This movie will challenge the bike/ski mentality of Rossland, and give frolf a much needed showcasing. So, come on out to the filmfest to support a local film maker and the sport that is taking Rossland by storm.
